A Study in Grey & Rye
Redwood National Park
I came across this scene one day while traveling the pass between Orick and Weitchpec, in the Redwood National Park. It was late October, and the ryegrass had gone to seed. The dark clouds threatened all day, and occasionally would release a few drops of rain. The title is meant to suggest that the image makes a mockery of traditional composition. It is an irreverent title, and meant to be thought of that way. The peace of this image, for me, however, is found in the fence posts, which disappear into the hill. They represent the anchor which holds us in place, allowing us a point of reference, something from which we can move forward through in time.
