Masaya's Messiah

Masaya Volcanic National Park
Nicaragua, Central America

Before I tell you the story I’ve just got to say a quick THANK YOU to Jaime, for making this trip happen. Ok…here’s the story.  Apparently the word Masaya means ‘the place just over there’.  Amazingly it’s pronounced “Messiah.”

There are two massive calderas that sit side by side and with a gas mask you can even go down and walk along the edge of the crater – if you really wanted to; but I wouldn’t recommend it because the noxious fumes can kill you, literally.

When this volcano erupts, it fills the two calderas to the brim and then run over the edge of the crater, and from what I was told it’s truly a remarkable thing to witness.

But it does give legitimacy to why there’s a cross on the top of that hill!

See Ya On the Trail!
