The 14 mile hike that led to this spot was like a journey backwards in time. When I entered the canyon at the top, all the trees were bare: Winter had arrived. Then I hiked, down, down, mostly through water up over my knees, and a couple times chest deep.
About four miles deeper into the canyon, I found a few brilliant yellow leaves still clinging tenaciously to their branches as Winter approached.
Just a few miles later, I found amazing color. The trees were covered with glowing yellow, orange and red leaves the likes of which I’d rarely seen. I had returned to the Fall of my childhood.
Here, at the end of the canyon, almost back to civilization, the leaves had not yet turned: they remained a lovely green, verging on the Fall change. It felt like it was still Summer down here, and if I hadn’t already been soaked, I would have gone swimming.
