Arched Reeds

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Michigan, USA

I was up to my waist in swamp water just a few hundred yards from the lake’s edge, but with the dense forest of pine trees the lake could not be seen.

Luckily, I had been in the Everglades earlier in the year, and had polished my skills of using a large format camera in water up to my waist; it’s much harder than it sounds.

Wearing my hot chilies to help keep my legs protected, I thought nothing of wading into the water. After about fifteen minutes in the water though, I started feeling sharp pains in my lower legs. Leaving my camera and tripod in the water I made my way to the water’s edge. Pulling up my hot chilies revealed about twenty leeches, very small but nonetheless annoying, covering my legs. After peeling them off I placed my hot chilies into my socks (thinking that they couldn’t get in after that) and went back out to finish my work. “No ripples in the water; trip the shutter!

See Ya On the Trail!
